Kahn grew up in a Jewish family in Amsterdam-Zuid. His parents separated when he was sixteen. A year earlier, he had left school to start working. He found a job as a buyer at De Bijenkorf.
Together with his first wife, Gabby, he opened a boutique called Privé on the Nieuwendijk. Three years later, he opened the first CoolCat store in Amsterdam. The store focused on young people with affordable, trendy clothing. Within a year, there were already five locations in Amsterdam, and the company grew to 130 stores across the Benelux and France. In the eighties, the clothing chain was on the verge of bankruptcy.
In 2010, he acquired MS Mode, and in 2012, the lingerie brand Sapph. With this, Kahn built an empire of approximately 600 stores and 6,000 employees. In addition to his stores, Kahn deals in real estate and is a co-owner of the De Bijenkorf building in Amsterdam.
In the spring of 2001, Kahn acquired the Amici fashion stores. In 2006, he became the owner of America Today, which he acquired from the then shareholders. With this, he began focusing on clothing for students.
V&D In early 2016, Kahn was a key candidate to acquire the bankrupt department store chain V&D. However, negotiations failed, leading to the company's closure. Together with Ronald van Zetten, Kahn paid half a million euros for the V&D name. The plan was to open an online store under that name, but they ultimately decided the V&D name was not suitable.
