Kahn grew up in a Jewish family in Amsterdam-Zuid. His parents separated when he was sixteen. A year earlier, he had left school to start working. He found a job as a buyer at De Bijenkorf.

Together with his first wife, Gabby, he opened a boutique called Privé on the Nieuwendijk. Three years later, he opened the first CoolCat store in Amsterdam. The store focused on young people with affordable, trendy clothing. Within a year, there were already five locations in Amsterdam, and the company grew to 130 stores across the Benelux and France. In the eighties, the clothing chain was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Acquisitions
