Floris Geeris

Floris Geeris grew up in Vught and attended the Maurick College in Vught for his pre-university education. He subsequently studied business administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he earned his master's degree in 2003.

Entrepreneurship was in Geeris's blood, so he soon started his own business, successfully building a small chain of custom clothing stores. After selling this, Geeris moved into project development, focusing on projects within the energy sector starting in 2013.

Sustainable energy projects

In 2013, Geeris co-founded Bin2Barrel Waste 2 Fuel with Paul Harkema, an entrepreneur with a background in waste management. Their goal was to convert waste into fuel in a sustainable way using pyrolysis, a method in which materials are decomposed by heating them in the absence of oxygen. They found a location in the Port of Amsterdam for converting non-recyclable plastics into green fuel. The permit was granted in 2017. Some time later, Geeris and Harkema sold the project to the publicly traded Australian company IGES, which had its own pyrolysis technology. Due to the subsequent, unrelated bankruptcy of the Australian IGES, the project in Amsterdam was unfortunately halted.

Bio Energy Netherlands

In 2015, Geeris was asked to consult for a company that wanted to produce hydrogen in the Netherlands and had identified the Port of Amsterdam as the location for this. Bio Energy Netherlands was founded at the end of 2016, with Geeris as director. Bio Energy Netherlands focuses on converting sustainable biomass into biogas (syngas). This ultra-clean syngas (free of tars) can then be used to produce green hydrogen and green CO2, which serve as raw materials in the chemical industry and as biofuels. The facility in Amsterdam produces green electricity and heat, which is supplied to a local heating network.

Hydrogen production

The gasification plant of Bio Energy Netherlands is the first of its kind in the Netherlands. The facility uses 'Stratified Fixed Bed Downdraft Gasifiers, developed by the American company Net Zero Hydrogen. This patented gasification technology enables the commercial-scale production of syngas with an extremely low tar content. The technology has been evaluated by the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and is considered technologically proven. Thanks to this ultra-clean syngas, Bio Energy Netherlands succeeded in 2023 in becoming the first in the world to produce pure hydrogen from biowaste, a major milestone in the development of sustainable energy sources.
